  Interview With...
Robert Miller
Of Pretty Pervy by Obviously Odd
  How it began
My understanding is that there was nothing, then there was a great big bang and all the nothing exploded out into something - which doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but does seem quite reasonable as nothing I have come across in life actually makes any real sense...

Oh, how I began? Well, that was a weird route through opt out academia, film, photography and communications dabblings, movie costuming, theatre design and commercial costuming. In hindsight whilst I was studying theatre design, all my design projects did have quite strong "fetish" undertones, although I was unaware of it at the time - mostly!

As for how individual things I create come into existence, that is not unlike my original answer.
  Design philosophy
That's not something I'd like to corset into two-dimensional words. But if I had to, I would probably say that my designs are like a nice juicy pink, fuchsia, magenta or whatever you want to call it. (you'll have noticed a lot of pink on the website).

Anyway, it's the kind of pink that temporarily blinds you, tiptoes up and stamps on your feet, dashes round and kicks your bum, then finally runs up your prone body and lovingly massages your scalp. Something like that anyway.

You'll love it or hate it, or possibly hate it then love it but never love it then hate it. Most things I create are interwoven with contradiction and humour, sometimes puerile, sometimes ironic; but mostly just odd. I have a great attention to detail and everything is there for a reason. People might not see it, they might not understand it, but it is there and that is what is important....

OK, so maybe occasionally I come up with something "just because", but what do
you expect when asking about a "philosophy"?
  Art, fashion, clothing or costume
Difficult to categorise, I hate putting things in boxes - you only have to take a look around the workshop! My work does tend to contain more complex and valid concepts that those entered into the Turner prize, so if that is your idea of art then I suppose by definition I must be an artist, although I wouldn't agree with that.

I've never followed fashion nor been particularly anti-fashion, my designs will never have the herd following required to become fashionable so I think that fashion is definitely out of the question; however I occasionally use the term for convenience.

Clothing suggest utilitarian and functional, neither are adjectives I would use in the same breath as Pretty Pervy; except on this occasion. Costume is probably the most accurate. People put on things I have made and become somebody else.
  Inspirations?
Thousands of different things. People, places, colours, textures, nature, films, art, industrial design, emotions... Often very subliminal.

I try to limit the amount of physical research on any project to avoid being over influenced,
unless of course the subject requires it.

Often designing for an individual involves getting inside their head and discovering their subconscious inspirations, not mine.
The future of Obviously Odd / Pretty Pervy
Bigger, better things. Whatever happens in whatever direction comes naturally.

There is the complex and cunning plan of world domination of course, but I'd have to kill you if I told you - that would involve visits with black sacks to Epping forest and I really don't have time for all that kind of thing.
